Exclusive interview: My mom taught me music ─Mac Roc Abuja based music producer speaks on his career

Music Producer EfeOghene MacDonald AKA Mac Roc, from delta state based in Abuja, who recently appeared on the entertainment page of The Authority Newspaper spoke with IYBlog on his career. The Mac Roc Production' CEO, on this interview,  he expresses himself encouraging those who think they can't make it in music to keep on the good works they are doing, that definitely one day they will be recognised.............just read what he has for you!

Can we see you sir?

Am Efeoghene Macdonald from delta state... am a music producer, I use my music to promote right living, morals, the gospel, peace, values, etc.. 

What kind of musician can you best describe yourself, why? and how long have you been into music? 

I will say am that musician that don't compromise with the quality of my art, music ,wow! I have been into music almost all my life, started music as a keyboardist that was like 2006 there about. 

Which instruments do you play? 

piano, drums 

What was the first tune(s) you learned? 

lol a lot of church choruses, had a music book for praise and worship then. 

Is your family musical? 


Describe your family member's musical interests and abilities. 

Dad used to be a choir leader, Mom too, Mum actually taught me how to play the piano, then my sister a wonderful soloist. 

Which famous musicians do you admire? why? 

Cohbams …...he is quality personified. 

Which famous Nigerian musicians have you learned from? 

A whole lot, endless list, we keep on learning new strategies from musicians daily. 

Who was your first teacher? other teachers? 

My Mum was my first music teacher 

Describe your first instrument. and also tell us about your first song since you sing too

The piano. 

What are your fondest musical memories? in your house? in your neighborhood or town? 

A lot of memories, lol..the one i can remember is when we all had a song to perform at a concert, and we all had rehearsals, Dad be singing some coded off notes… 

Were you influenced by old records & tapes? which ones?

Yes I was, Sunny Okosun, Righteous Man, Benita etc..

Who is or are your favorite musicians?

I really don't have a favourite 

Have you been in competitions? any award? 

Yes, Peak talent hunt 2007, did not qualify, Glo rock and rule in 2008, I won, couple of nominations in major awards, won some. 

Do you perform in public? describe those occasions? concerts, radio, tv?

It's always a great feeling being asked to perform in public, that's part of the job 

Apart from music what other thing can you best do? an ICT professional, network admin, an actor, a model, a consultant and coach.

As a producer, how do you handle mistakes during a performance?

Rule 1: Never let your audience know that something has gone wrong, as for me i always smile, even when things aint going according to plan. i don't panic 

Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition? 

No. thats just another opportunity to do what you love 

Do you teach music? tell us about your educational background 

Yes I do teach. well am a graduate of computer science, and plenty other professional courses, studied at Benson Idahosa University, Benin city. 

Do you have an album? what is your latest song and how can your fans get it quick? 

No album yet, done a whole lot of collaborations and covers, the quickest way to get them.. just google mac roc songs...they will all pop out. 

How often and for how long do you practice as a musician? 

practice is our life, its what we breathe …. 

What do you practice - exercises, new tunes, hard tunes, etc.? 

Routines, movements, a whole lot. 

What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous? 

Entertainment is fun...go out there and have fun. 

How do you balance your music with other obligations? are you single or married? 

Am not married for now ...there's always time for everything. there's always a balance.
